Dubai earns its nickname "City of Gold" — it's home to one of the world's most active gold markets, competitive prices, and a VAT exemption on investment-grade gold. Here's a complete guide to buying gold in Dubai in 2026.
Physical gold: the Dubai Gold Souk
The Gold Souk in Deira is the most iconic option and genuinely one of the best places in the world to buy physical gold jewellery. Over 300 retailers compete on price, and the making charges (craftsmanship premium) are significantly lower than in India or Europe.
For jewellery purchases, price it in grams of the karat you want (22K or 21K is most common). The gold content price is fixed by the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group daily — the making charges are where you negotiate. Typical making charges range from AED 3-8 per gram for simple designs to AED 15-25 for elaborate pieces.
Physical gold bars and coins
For investment gold, DMCC-accredited refiners and dealers like Emirates Gold, Kaloti Gold, and Al Etihad Gold sell certified bars from 1 gram to 1 kilogram. Premiums over spot are typically 1-3%. Investment-grade gold (99.5% purity or above) is VAT-exempt in the UAE.
Gold ETFs on DFM
The Dubai Gold Securities (GOLD) ETF on the DFM tracks the spot gold price and is the easiest way to gain gold exposure without physical storage. You buy it like a stock through any UAE brokerage. No storage costs, fully liquid. The management fee is typically 0.4-0.5% annually.
Digital gold platforms
Platforms like Sarwa Gold allow fractional ownership of LBMA-certified physical gold stored in vaults, starting from as little as AED 50. You own actual gold — just stored on your behalf. Fees are around 0.5% annually. Good for regular small purchases (systematic investment plans).
Which to choose?
For jewellery: Gold Souk, always. For investment with physical possession: certified bars from DMCC dealers. For investment without the hassle: DFM Gold ETF or Sarwa Gold. All have their place — the right choice depends on your purpose and comfort with storage.
