Investing in UAE Stocks — What You Need to Know

DFM vs ADX — what's the difference?

The Dubai Financial Market (DFM) and Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) are the UAE's two main stock exchanges, both regulated by the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA). The DFM is heavier in real estate and banking — Emaar Properties, Emirates NBD, and Air Arabia are among its most traded names. The ADX skews toward energy and telecoms, anchored by First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB), e& (formerly Etisalat), and ADNOC Distribution. Both trade in AED, with sessions running Sunday to Thursday from 10am to 3pm.

How to start investing as a UAE resident

You need a National Investor Number (NIN) — the UAE's equivalent of a brokerage ID — obtainable free through the DFM or ADX websites. You then open a brokerage account: Sarwa Trade, Emirates NBD Securities, FAB Securities, and ENBD's brokerage platform are popular options. International brokers like Interactive Brokers also support UAE markets. There is no stamp duty, no capital gains tax, and no personal income tax on stock investments for UAE residents.

Key sectors and flagship companies

UAE markets are concentrated in four sectors: banking (FAB, ENBD, ADCB, Mashreq), real estate (Emaar, Aldar, DAMAC), telecoms (e&, du), and energy (ADNOC Distribution, Dana Gas). Emaar Properties is the most watched UAE stock — its performance broadly reflects Dubai's real estate and hospitality cycle. FAB is the largest bank by market cap in the MENA region. e& (formerly Etisalat) is a dividend stalwart, consistently returning 5–7% annually to shareholders.

Dividends and trading costs

Many UAE blue-chips pay meaningful dividends — a function of high profitability and low reinvestment requirements in mature businesses. FAB, ENBD, and e& have been consistent payers at 4–7% yield in recent years. Trading costs are low: brokerage commissions run 0.1–0.5% per trade plus a small DFM/ADX fee of 0.02%. For long-term buy-and-hold investors, the total-cost picture is favourable compared to many developed markets.
