How to Get Your UAE Credit Card Annual Fee Waived

Most UAE banks will waive your annual fee if you know how to ask — and meet a simple spending threshold. Here's exactly how to do it for the most popular cards.

Annual fees on UAE credit cards range from AED 300 to AED 2,000+. Most banks have internal policies to waive these fees — they're designed to retain customers, not lose them over a fee. Here's how to use this to your advantage.

The standard approach: call and ask

The simplest method works more often than people expect. Call your bank's credit card line before your annual fee posts. Say you're considering cancelling the card because of the fee. In most cases, the retention team will offer either a full waiver, a partial waiver, or bonus reward points to offset the fee.

Banks that most consistently waive fees on request: Mashreq, Standard Chartered, ENBD, and RAKbank. FAB and ADCB are less consistent but worth trying.

Spending thresholds: earn the waiver

Many UAE credit cards have automatic fee waivers if you hit a spending threshold. These are often buried in the card's terms and conditions. Common examples:

Standard Chartered Platinum: fee waived with AED 10,000 monthly spend. Mashreq Cashback: fee waived with AED 5,000 monthly spend. ENBD U Rewards: fee waived with AED 5,000 monthly spend.

Check your card's terms — if you're close to the threshold, consolidating your spending on one card for a month may save you the fee entirely.

The cancel threat: timing matters

If you're going to threaten cancellation, do it before the fee posts (not after). Once the fee has hit your statement, you've already paid it in the bank's system and the retention offer is typically weaker. Call 30 days before your card anniversary.

When to just pay it

If you're getting significant value from the card — lounge access, travel insurance, high cashback — paying the fee is often worth it. Run the numbers: if you use the lounge twice a quarter (AED 100+ per visit at many airports), a AED 300 annual fee has already paid for itself.

If the card is just sitting in a drawer, cancel it. A card you don't use isn't building your credit profile meaningfully and the fee is pure waste.
