If you've been sending money home from the UAE for any length of time, you've probably heard of Wise, Remitly, and TapTapSend. All three are digital-first, app-based, and significantly cheaper than traditional bank transfers. But they're not identical — and the best choice depends on your corridor, amount, and how you want your recipient to receive the money.
How each service makes its money
Understanding the business model helps you know what you're comparing.
Wise charges a transparent percentage fee (typically 0.5–0.9% depending on the currency) on top of the mid-market exchange rate. There's no spread — the rate is the real rate. This makes Wise the most transparent option and often the best for large amounts where percentage fees eat less proportionally.
Remitly uses a combination of exchange rate spread and flat fees that vary by corridor and delivery speed. Their "Economy" tier (1–2 day delivery) is cheaper; "Express" (minutes to hours) costs more. They also frequently offer promotional rates and fee waivers for new customers, which can make them the cheapest option for a first transfer.
TapTapSend (owned by Western Union but operating independently) typically charges zero transfer fees and applies a small spread on the exchange rate. The no-fee structure is genuinely competitive, particularly for mid-sized transfers where Wise's percentage fee would otherwise add up.
Head-to-head by corridor
For AED to INR (India): All three are competitive. TapTapSend's no-fee structure often edges ahead on transfers of AED 1,000–3,000. Wise wins on very large amounts. Remitly is best for first-time senders due to promotions.
For AED to PKR (Pakistan): Remitly has the strongest cash pickup network (Easypaisa, JazzCash). Wise is most reliable for bank deposits. TapTapSend is competitive but check rates on the day.
For AED to PHP (Philippines): Remitly's GCash integration is a significant advantage if your family uses it. Wise and TapTapSend are better for bank deposits.
For AED to GBP or EUR: Wise is consistently the best choice. Their UK and European banking infrastructure means genuinely fast, cheap transfers to these regions.
Speed comparison
Wise: same day for most corridors to established banks. Some destinations take 1–2 business days. Remitly Express: typically within minutes to hours. Remitly Economy: 1–3 business days. TapTapSend: instant to same day for most corridors.
Which should you use?
There's no single winner. The honest answer is: check the comparison for the specific amount you're sending today, because rates change and promotions come and go.
Use Wise if: you value transparency above all, you're sending a large amount, or you're sending to Europe or the UK. Use Remitly if: you're a new customer (promotions), your recipient needs cash pickup, or you're sending to a GCash wallet. Use TapTapSend if: you want zero fees and a competitive rate for South Asian corridors.
