Mobile Wallets in UAE Compared: Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Careem Pay, and More

Tap-to-pay and mobile wallets are everywhere in the UAE. Here's how Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, and UAE-specific wallets like Careem Pay and Botim compare.

Mobile payments have become the default for many UAE residents. Whether you're paying for coffee, splitting a dinner bill, or sending money home, there's a wallet for it. Here's how they compare.

Apple Pay

Apple Pay works with most UAE bank cards (ENBD, ADCB, FAB, Mashreq, RAKbank, and others). Tap your iPhone or Apple Watch at any NFC-enabled terminal — which is nearly all POS terminals in the UAE now. No transaction fees for the user. Works for in-store, in-app, and online payments.

Limit: AED 500 per tap without PIN; above AED 500 requires PIN or Face ID authentication. Supported by almost all major UAE banks.

Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay works similarly to Apple Pay but with a broader range of Samsung devices. It supports both NFC and MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission), meaning it works at some older terminals that don't have contactless readers. Same bank support as Apple Pay for the most part. No user fees.

Google Pay (Google Wallet)

Google Pay launched in the UAE later than Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. It works on Android phones with NFC capability. Bank support has expanded significantly — most major UAE banks now support it. Functionality is similar: tap to pay at NFC terminals, in-app payments, and online checkout.

Careem Pay

Careem Pay is a UAE-grown digital wallet that goes beyond tap-to-pay. You can send money to other Careem Pay users instantly and for free, pay bills (DEWA, Etisalat, du), and send international remittances to India, Pakistan, Philippines, and other countries.

For remittances, Careem Pay charges no transfer fees for standard users and offers competitive exchange rates. Careem Pay Plus members get even better rates. Funds are held in a licensed e-wallet regulated by the UAE Central Bank.

The wallet can be funded via bank transfer, card top-up, or Careem ride earnings. It's particularly useful for people who already use Careem for rides and deliveries.

Botim Pay

Botim (the messaging app licensed for VoIP calls in the UAE) includes a payment feature. You can send money to contacts within the UAE for free and make international transfers. Botim Pay is regulated by the Central Bank.

It's mainly used for P2P payments and basic remittances rather than in-store purchases. The international transfer feature is convenient if you already use Botim for calls.

PayBy

PayBy is a newer UAE-based mobile payment app that allows QR code payments, money transfers, and bill payments. It's accepted at RTA parking meters, some petrol stations, and a growing number of retailers. The app works independently of your bank — you load it via bank transfer or card.

Security

All major mobile wallets use tokenisation — your actual card number is never shared with the merchant. This makes mobile payments more secure than physical card swipes. In the unlikely event of fraud, your bank's standard card fraud protection applies.

Apple Pay and Google Pay require biometric authentication (Face ID, fingerprint) for transactions above AED 500, adding an extra security layer.

Which to use

For in-store payments: Apple Pay (iPhone users) or Samsung/Google Pay (Android users). All three are free, fast, and widely accepted across the UAE.

For P2P transfers within UAE: Careem Pay is the most versatile, combining rides, payments, and transfers in one app.

For international remittances: Careem Pay offers competitive rates with zero fees, though comparing against Wise and dedicated transfer providers on dirham247.ae is advisable for large amounts.

For bill payments: Most UAE banks' own apps handle DEWA and telecom bills. Careem Pay and PayBy offer alternatives if you prefer consolidating payments in one non-bank app.
